What is the Value of Good Character?

Character is the secret of lasting personal success. Recently, some have achieved temporary gain even through poor character choices; however, such success hasn’t lasted long. This kind of “success” can be disastrous. True and lasting success is built upon good character.

Character is defined as: “The qualities built into a person’s life that determine his or her response, regardless of the circumstances.” The good news is that character is an easily developable resource for us.

Why is Character Important?

Creating workplace rules and posting organizational values alone cannot solve behavior problems such as absenteeism, self-centeredness, anger between co-workers, low productivity and poor workmanship. These kinds of problems are rooted in weakly formed character. The most accurate predictor of a person’s future behavior is his or her character. Establishing a foundation of good character will allow an organization and its people to be truly successful, not just on the bottom line, but much more broadly.
